Spoonbills' Falcon Hospital Visit

Spoonbills had a fantastic time at the Falcon hospital yesterday. They had the opportunity to learn more about Falconry and hold a Falcon. They even saw a Falcon being treated by a vet. As well as seeing Falcons some children got to see owls and peahens. The children were able to hold a falcon, they were so brave, some were frightened but many still held one and overcame their fears. One dog was improving her agility, learning tricks and undergoing training. Much to Miss Orr's delight they visited a room full of cats! All in all a fabulous trip!

Storks - Visit to the Falcon Hospital

The Storks had a wonderful time visiting the Falcon Hospital today! We learned about the 3 different types of falcons that live in the UAE and that the females are always larger than the males. Most of us were brave enough to hold a falcon and have our picture taken with it. We then went to see some falcons in the moulting cage, where the air is chilled to ensure the best moulting environment during the hot summer months. Then we went to see the dogs and were treated to an agility performance from a very cute little doggy. Finally, we went to see the cats in the cattery! Miss Orr wanted to take the wee cat with only 3 legs home! What a brilliant day!

Year 2 Herons had a fantastic time during reading week. We read and discussed the story of Aladdin and had fun retelling it in our own words. We really enjoys Morgane's mum as our mystery reader.

Flamingos Buddy Reading

Flamingos really enjoyed buddy reading with Year 4 Warblers. So much so that they asked for more time to carry on. It was really nice for them to read their new book fair books to each other. It was lovely to see them praise and help each other whilst reading.

Spoonbills - Book Character Day

Spoonbills have really enjoyed dressing up as some of their favourite book characters!
Can you guess who we all are?

Book Week :)

It's Book Week and we are having a great week in Sandpipers Class. During our literacy lessons this week we are making our very own Big Book based on the story of Aladdin. Yesterday we visited the Book Fair and bought some amazing books. That's not all, today we are all dressed up as our favourite book characters. Have a look at the picture, can you guess who we are?

Storks - Reading with Year 4 Wagtails

So far Book Week at Al Yasmina in Year 2 has went incredibly well. The Storks were very fortunate today to visit the Year 4 Wagtails in order to read with them and enjoy different stories and poems together. We got off to a fabulous start when the Wagtails children performed the poem 'The Bogeyman' for the Storks children and managed to make some of us 'jump' and then laugh. The Storks children then impressed the older children by reading the books they brought with them to them; then the Wagtails read some of their books to us. Thank you to the Year 4 Wagtails for supporting our little learners and helping them to read their books beautifully.

Book Week - Aladdin sequencing

So it's book week and Flamingos are learning about the story Aladdin. They worked hard as a group to sequence the story correctly and then read through it to check it makes sense. After that they walked around the classroom to see how the other groups had sequenced the story. We will be creating a big class book on Aladdin and acting out the scenes.

Traditional Emirati Games

The non-native students have had a wonderful time learning how to play traditional Emirati games. What fun we have had! Here we can see the students playing the 'Al Ma'okazi' game where a group of boys would traditionally walk on tip toes to see who could walk the fastest for the longest distance. We can also see the students playing 'Al Laqfa' where, traditionally, the girls would sit in a circle with 10 pebbles or sea shells laid on the floor; they would throw a bigger pebble in the air and, with the same hand, pebbles would be collected from the floor before they caught the bigger pebble. The final game we can see is the 'Al Ghomaid' game - this is a game played by boys and girls where one of the children is blindfolded then he or she must try to catch one of the other children; the whole group makes sounds to confuse the catcher and when the "blind" child catches one of the other players, it is that child's turn to be blindfolded.

Changes in the UAE

We were so fortunate to kick off our new topic, Changes in the UAE, with a visit from two of the Emirati mums, Mahra and Ayesha. They regaled the students and teachers with tales of how life used to be in the UAE when they were children and when their parents were children. The students and teachers were both engrossed and grateful for the wealth of information they imparted on us all. Some students had come prepared with questions to ask Mahra and Ayesha and they answered them in such a way that engaged and informed us all. What a wonderful start to term 3; thank you ladies!

Spoonbill's Marvellous Mathemagicians Open Morning

Thank you so much for coming along and being part of our Math's Open Morning. The children were delighted to show off their mathematical skills and enjoyed seeing the parents challenged by some of the activities. Below are a few photos from the Open Morning.

Spoonbills Fabulous Photographers

I am sure you will agree with me that Spoonbills did a marvelous job being photographers on their 'Tourist for a Day' Trip. They then selected their three best photos and edited them as well as adding effects. The final photos are below, which were also shared in their photographic exhibition held in class. I hope that these photos now take pride of place in you homes!

Flamingos Tourist for a day Exhibition

Flamingos were so excited to have their Mum's and Dad's come in to see their Photographs they had selected and edited themselves. We had lots of parents come in and ask fantastic questions. We then got to take our frames home to remind ourselves of our brilliant trip and the new skills we had learnt.

Storks - Click Photography Exhibition

It was a pleasure to welcome parents to our photography exhibition today. A number of parents commented on just how artistic, creative and professional the photographs were and I am very much inclined to agree! I have been wowed by the images the students captured, their editing skills and the finished, framed products. There are many that I would pay to have hanging on my wall at home. Well done to all.

Storks - Maths Open Morning

The Storks thoroughly enjoyed showing their parents some of the wonderful things they have been learning in maths this year and displaying the excellent progress they have made since September. We began by creating symmetrical patterns using cubes with a partner and then moved on to using numbers to 100, then focused on addition and subtraction skills and finished by showing the considerable skills developed in multiplication. I was very proud of all the students, as were their parents. Thank you to all who made it.

Science - World Habitats

This week is Science week and Flamingos have been learning about animals and their habitats.
Today we were looking at world habitats such as desert, ocean, artic and rainforest. We all had to select one and research what animals and plants live in that habitat. We found out lots of new facts then drew and labelled lovely habitat pictures.

Around The World - El Salvador

Sandpipers Class were lucky to have some guest speakers this morning. Silvia, Alessandra and Luna all from El Salvador came in to teach us all about their country as part of our topic. We got to see some traditional dress, foods, jewellery, art work, learn some Spanish and got to keep a beautiful pinata made by Silvia. A huge thank you from Sandpipers Class and we are looking forward to busting that pinata open at the end of term!!!

Sustainable Storks

The Storks have been learning different ways to look after our world. We discussed many things that we can change/do, such as: turning the lights off when we leave the room (as long as nobody else is still in it :)), not leaving the tap running when we brush our teeth, recycling our garbage and having a shower instead of a bath. We talked about how it is hard to walk to places in Abu Dhabi as it is often too hot and that there is not a lot of public transport, however, some children mentioned that they car pool in order to cut down the traffic on the road. The children then each made a pledge on something that they promise to do to help the world and signed it using a handprint.

Flamingos ICT

Flamingos had lots of fun learning about animals in the polar regions. They used PowerPoint which was programmed to ask branching questions and the children had to click yes or no and it would reveal the animal they had chosen. The children found this very clever and learnt lots about the animals.

Polar Explorers

Year 2 are delighted to be able to use their new shared curriculum focused area Polar Regions.
Some of the activities undertaken last week were constructing igloos out of sugar cubes, letting their creative juices flow completing Polar play dough activities, making models of rescue helicopters, ice vehicles, Antarctic Science labs etc from Lego. There are many more activities to enjoy including role play, maths and literacy activities and a scientific zone too!

This week we have started on making our own life size igloo out of milk cartons! Thank you Mum's who have got us off to such a wonderful start! Can't wait to see it continue taking shape.

Remember you get 2 House Points for every carton you bring in. As you can see we need loads more to make our igloo look something like this!
